Your life can be complex when you have bad credit. You are frequently denied the things that other people enjoy and sometimes it seems that no matter what you do you cannot get ahead of that dark cloud hanging over your head. If you have the time you can wait it out but if not there are steps you can take to improve or even repair your credit.

In 1970 the Fair Credit Reporting Act or the FCRA for short was enacted by Congress to protect consumers against inaccuracies and inconsistencies on reported credit. This act allows consumers to dispute inaccurate and untruthful listings on their credit report. It furthermore allows the consumers to receive a free copy of their own credit report one time per year. An amendment in 2003 made it so that the consumer could receive this report at no charge.

Your very first step when it comes to repairing your credit is to get a copy of this free credit report. There are lots of online websites and even commercials on TV that tell you where you can get your report. Just remember that one report per year is free so don’t pay anyone for it. If you need additional reports you may have to pay for them.

As soon as you get the report you need to verify the information and check for inconsistencies. It is projected that up to 75% or more of all credit reports are inaccurate and have mistakes. This is in fact a benefit to you because you can dispute those mistakes and if they are not verified within a certain time period they must be completely removed from your report.

The FCRA gave you the right to dispute the problems on your credit and do whatever you can to improve and repair your credit. You can do it yourself or you can hire a professional company to assist you. You are in no way required to hire a professional to help you and you may find that it is easy enough to do on your own. Other than the procedure can be time-consuming and frustrating and you may decide that it would just be easier for you to have the professional help. If you are busy in your life and your plate is already full you may really appreciate the added convenience of letting someone else handle it so that it can be accomplished in a timely manner.

No matter if you hire a professional or do it yourself be aware that it is against the law to have fair and correct information removed from your report. If the bad credit showing on your report is really all yours it may be better for you to just work at improving your overall financial state of affairs and improving the credit you have now.

Before you start to repair your credit make certain that you do some research into what you are doing. Here are some things that may come as a shock. For example many people are surprised that it may be better to leave an unpaid charge-off alone rather than try to pay it off. The reason why is that negative credit stays on your report from the date of the last activity and if you pay off an old debt you start the clock at zero again and add another 7 years or more.

There are various ways that you can improve your credit report and your credit rating. You can repair the inaccuracies and inconsistencies and you can take actions that will instantly improve your credit score. You have the right to know about and participate in your own credit history and you need to take advantage of that information if you have bad credit.
